The Secrets of Castlefield, St John's and Deansgate Square
2pm Sunday 14 August
This is where Manchester began and changed the world. The Romans came first, 1,942 years ago, and gave us the city name. Centuries later infrastructure came of age with the oldest industrial canal in the UK and the oldest passenger railway system in the world. The result is a place of dramatic urban landscapes, soaring railway bridges, waterways and even a giant’s basin. We'll also stand on the dead too in a many of speaking and walk the excellent public realm viewing while discussing the tallest buildings in the UK outside London.
The tour will explore all these features and themes, taking into account the epic achievement of the area but also the human stories that bring history to life. We’ll visit the oldest piece of Manchester that survives, hidden away, in a surprise location.
If you want to gain an understanding of this hugely significant area then please come along.
Meet: Outside the Science and Industry Museum, M3 4FP, for a 2pm start.
Duration: most tours last between ninety minutes and two hours
Fully accessible
Totally fascinating
